This device, named after American physician Dr. Claude Sengstaken, consists of a gastric balloon and an esophageal balloon connected to a triple-lumen tube.
During placement, the esophageal balloon is positioned in the lower esophagus to exert pressure on varices, thus controlling bleeding. Simultaneously, the gastric balloon is inflated in the stomach to provide counterpressure against the esophageal balloon. This mechanism effectively compresses the veins, helping to staunch the bleeding.
The Sengstaken Tube is primarily used as a temporary measure to stabilize patients before definitive treatment. It requires careful monitoring due to potential complications like aspiration, tissue necrosis, or migration of the tube.
